Making positive impacts on society and the environment
Life Insurance -At TAL, sustainability means providing insurance that is fair, affordable, and valuable for members, while remaining strong and reliable for our super fund partners. As a corporate citizen, ‘sustainability’ also means acting responsibly as a business and striving to make a positive difference for our people, communities and the environment.
To reflect this focus, we have reframed our previous Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Priorities as our Sustainability Priorities. These priorities aren’t just about meeting regulatory requirements; they reflect our maturing approach to ‘sustainability’ and evolving stakeholder and business needs. With members, regulators and other stakeholders all expecting funds to demonstrate responsible investment and partnership choices, our refreshed Sustainability Priorities responds to these expectations, helping funds support their own sustainability commitments.
Our updated Sustainability Priorities also directly support members’ lives. For instance, we focus on mental health and wellbeing through tailored programs, giving members practical resources to manage challenges. Initiatives that support vulnerable members, including those experiencing family and domestic violence, help ensure those members can access financial support and insurance benefits in times of need.
We’re also investing in our people to foster an inclusive and capable workforce, which translates into better service for members. Strong data protection and privacy measures safeguard member information, maintaining trust and confidence in the services we provide.
Over the past few years, our sustainability initiatives have delivered a range of tangible outcomes:
- Environmental impact. We’ve reduced our operational carbon footprint by 34% between FY19 and FY24, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship while maintaining operational excellence.
- Enhanced accessibility. Life insurance is now more accessible for Australians living with HIV, helping more people protect themselves and their families.
- Vulnerable member support. Our comprehensive Family and Domestic Violence Policy ensures members facing difficult circumstances receive sensitive, tailored support when they need it most.
- Inclusive workforce. Women now represent over 40% of our leadership roles, helping us build a team that reflects and understands the diverse communities we serve.
These achievements show that prioritising people, communities, and responsible operations creates tangible benefits for members and fund partners alike.
We will continue to evolve our sustainability approach, expanding programs that support member wellbeing, improving workplace inclusivity and maintaining strong data and privacy standards. By keeping members at the centre, TAL ensures long-term positive outcomes while supporting the missions of our fund partners.
