Mental Health

Mental health conditions remain the leading cause of accepted claims at TAL, accounting for 27% of all accepted claims in our group insurance portfolio last financial year, and they continue to grow faster than any other cause. 1

Across the broader community, 22% of Australian adults have experienced a mental health condition in the past year, and 43% will experience one at some point in their lives.2

Now more than ever, funds have a significant role to play in shining a light on the small, positive steps members can take to care for their mental health. Proactive education and early intervention can make a real difference to members’ long-term wellbeing and our suite of ready‑to‑use content is designed to help you deliver that support in meaningful and practical ways.

TAL Life Insurance Services Limited ABN 31 003 149 157 (TLISL) paid claims on group life insurance policies issued to superannuation fund trustees during the period 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025 (FY 2025). All percentages have been rounded to the nearest whole number. The acceptance of each claim is subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the life insurance policies issued by TAL and TLISL. A claim is 'accepted' when the claim has been assessed and is determined to be payable.

Cancer Health

cancer content image

At TAL, cancer was the 2nd highest area for accepted claims across our portfolio in our last financial year.

In the broader community context, Cancer Australia estimates there were more than 162K cancer cases diagnosed and nearly 50K deaths in 2022.

The incidence of cancer types in 2022 was topped by prostate cancer, followed by breast cancer, melanoma, colorectal and lung cancer.

The good news is that there are national screening campaigns for many of these cancers an early-detection provides the best opportunity for successful treatment.

Together, we have an important role to play in ensuring employees engage with their health so they can live life to the fullest – not only while they’re working, but into retirement as well.

Cardiovascular Health

At TAL, conditions of the circulatory system which include cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) like heart attack and stroke ranked fifth for accepted claims in our last financial year.

In the broader community context, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that there were more than 100 stroke events and 155 coronary events every day in 2022 and 6.2% of adults (1.2 million) had one or more CVD condition.

The good news is that there are simple steps we can all take to reduce our risk of CVD and improve our overall health. Together, we have an important role to play in ensuring members engage with their health so they can live life to the fullest –not only while they’re working, but into retirement as well.

Musculoskeletal Health

At TAL, musculoskeletal conditions were the fourth highest area for accepted claims across our portfolio in our last financial years1.

In the broader community context, the Australian Bureau estimates there were more than 6.9 million or 27% of Australians affected by chronic musculoskeletal conditions in the 2020-212. Of these people, 3.9 million (16%) had back problems.

In 2023, musculoskeletal conditions accounted for 12.8% of the total disease burden in Australia and was the leading cause of non-fatal disease burden accounting for 7.9%2.

The good news is that there are simple steps that can be taken to avoid these conditions including managing weight, stopping smoking and reducing occupational hazards.

Together, we have an important role to play in ensuring members engage with their health so they can live life to the fullest.
