Supporting first nations reconciliation - New Masterclass video available

Community -

Last week, NAIDOC Week (6-13 July) was a powerful reminder of the importance of recognising and celebrating the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At TAL, we’re proud to continue supporting reconciliation beyond NAIDOC Week through meaningful initiatives aligned to our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). In collaboration with our partner Stonecrab, we’ve developed a new 20 minute Masterclass video on Indigenous Cultural Awareness, presented by Jason Timor, Managing Director of Stonecrab and a proud Badu/Waiben Island man from the Torres Strait Islands.

The Insurance Academy Masterclass is designed for fund partners to help build awareness, understanding and action across our industry. The module explores shared histories and cultures, the ongoing impact of historical events, and how we can all contribute to reconciliation both in the workplace and in our communities. It also provides insights from Reconciliation Australia’s State of Reconciliation report.

Learning outcomes

By engaging with this Masterclass, participants will:

  • Have a foundational level cultural awareness learning.
  • Understand the historical and socio-economic factors impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s financial health and participation in the economy.
  • Recognise the unique financial challenges faced by Indigenous Australians and the diversity of communities.
  • Develop culturally safe services and engagement strategies.
Accessing the Masterclass

The 20-minute video is available now by logging into Group HQ, then navigating to the Insurance Academy learning platform from your dashboard. We encourage you and your teams to take this opportunity to build your knowledge and contribute to TAL’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation.

Volunteering with National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA) in the Northern Territory

In addition to education and cultural awareness initiatives, TAL Community Foundation is a proud partner of NASCA, helping make a difference in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Each year, TAL employees can spend a week in remote communities across the Northern Territory, helping to deliver NASCA’s programs that support school engagement and positive outcomes for young Aboriginal Australians. From classroom support to after-school sport and community events, our volunteers contribute to building confidence, connection and opportunity where it matters most.

Earlier this year, TAL team member Colleen Norris travelled to the community of Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff), 230 km west of Alice Springs.

“Participating in the NASCA program was an amazing experience. It was enlightening, challenging, eye-opening and a little tough at times but it filled my heart. It will go down as one of my favourite weeks ever.”

Colleen’s experience offered a personal glimpse into the strength and resilience of the local community and the meaningful impact NASCA’s work creates every day.
